LinkedIn has been around for many years but has been sorely misunderstood by the majority. Many people use it to showcase their skills to get hired, which it’s good for, but where LinkedIn shines is in creating a professional network

So what is LinkedIn and why is it so important?

LinkedIn is a social media platform that differs from the others because it focuses on business professionals. In fact, LinkedIn is 227% more effective for lead generation than Facebook and Twitter, for businesses, especially ones that sell products or services to other businesses.

This means if you fit into that category and aren’t using LinkedIn, you should definitely consider it.

So how do you start taking advantage of LinkedIn?

Contrary to other platforms, LinkedIn is quite simple, including its algorithm. Which they outline directly on their website. I know. Whenever you post, LinkedIn sorts your post into one of three content categories which are: Spam, Low Quality, and High Quality.

The Spam Category. Which is obviously the worst of the 3, will result in your post being suppressed leading to no interactions. To avoid your posts from falling into this category don’t:

  • Add way too many links to your post
  • Add irrelevant or excessive tagging of other users
  • Posting multiple times within a 3-hour span
  • Or using spammie hashtags like #follow, #likeforlike, or #comment.

The next level up is the Low Quality Category. This means your post isn’t spam, but LinkedIn doesn’t really think it’s high quality either. Which, personally, feels worse than the spam category. Basically this is the purgatory of posts and while you may get some interaction, it’s won’t be great.

The final category is High Quality. This is the type of content you want to aim for, and there’s a couple ways that LinkedIn identifies that content. Make your post easy to read

  • use less than three hashtags per post
  • target appropriate and niche keywords
  • and put any outbound links in a comment, not the post itself.

Knowing how the LinkedIn algorithm works isn’t enough to make you a guru though. Just like with any content marketing, knowing your audience is the first step to success. LinkedIn is home to career minded professionals with $75,000 plus salaries. The demographic has a slight lean towards men, and a heavy lean to older users, with the majority of users being 36-55. Remember to keep this in mind when posting so your content is better received and doesn’t fall flat.

So, what should you post on LinkedIn?

The key to LinkedIn content is sticking to your niche or specialty. Whether that’s a lighthearted joke about your industry or an in-depth case study about your product or service. You want to present yourself as an expert in your niche or specialty, so that when people think about that niche or specialty, they immediately think of you. Not only will you gain klout from some potentially well-positioned professionals, LinkedIn favors these niche posts. Two birds with one stone right!
